Technology currently changes at such a rapid rate that as soon as you buy one product another is released that out dates it. People often switch computer hardware after only a few years of use, sometimes within one to three years of buying a product. When this happens, the old hardware becomes a cumbersome annoyance in the house that takes up space. When thrown out, these items often end up in landfills where they can cause damage to the environment and are wasted.

The materials used in the production of computers, printers and other hardware include various metals and plastics that can easily be turned around into new products. Recycling is the perfect answer to solving this problem and is not that hard to do. Many cities have recycling facilities that accept old computer hardware for recycling. To encourage this practice, they will often hold a day where people can bring in their items to various pick up locations.

One piece that is critical to recycle are printer cartridges. These can have chemicals in them leftover from ink which can be poisonous to the soil and animals. Office supply companies will usually offer incentives for you to bring them in and give you a coupon to use towards merchandise. The manufacturer may include a postage paid envelope for you to return the old cartridge in. This helps to protect nature from chemicals and also allows for the transformation of the old item into a new one that has the latest technology.
