With the popularity of “going green”, it was only a matter of time before computer technology got in on the act. If you are like many people who buy cacti because they are low maintenance and you can forget to water them and they will still strive, there is new technology available with the click of a mouse, which will help you in the garden.

Watering and Weather Systems

Many people make the mistake of planting too early, when frost at nighttime can kill your tomato plants or flower beds. There are monitors that will set off an alarm when the temperature drops below the dangerous level for plants and vegetables. This alarm will warn you that you need to cover your seedlings and sprouts overnight.

There are gadgets that will send hourly updates to let you know if you need to water your garden. Since over-watering can sometimes kill certain plants, this is a very handy tool.

These systems also measure humidity, wind, and sun.

Environmental Aids

There are sensory programs generated by a gadget you can place in a potted plant that will let you know if your plant needs more or less water, sunlight or shade, and some of these devices will even send you cell phone alerts, letting you know your plants need watering.

Mowing Your Lawn by Robot

There are robotic lawn mowers you can program to keep your lawn’s curb appeal all summer long. Set it to trim the lawn at a certain time, on a certain day, and watch in amazement as it avoids your border fence and vegetable garden, through sensors.

The Greenest Way to Recycle

A simple illustration of a sub-irrigated plant...

Recycling is not often seen as a fun activity. In fact, for many people recycling is just another inconvenient trip into town; however, recycling does not have to be “just another trip to the recycling center.” Recycling does not even have to involve going to the recycling center. And, when you make recycling seem like fun, more people around you might decide to take up recycling, too.

Plastic bottles and metal cans might seem like a big waste of space after they have been emptied, but both have fun uses after they are emptied. Cans and bottles can be turned into planters, which makes it even easier to go green while recycling. If you have children, plastic bottles can also be used for science experiments to explain things from recycling to alternative and renewable fuels. Glass bottles can be used as planters as well, though the glass can be hazardous if you have children, in which case it is probably better to send the glass to the recycling center.

Another recycling nightmare that can be turned into a green planter is an old computer. Different people have different views on these computer planters, but they are becoming increasingly popular among environmentally-friendly people. If you wish to try this with your own old computer then remember that the inside part of the computer should still be sent to a recycling center, since there are many chemicals and wires inside computers. The shell is the only part that should be used at home.

Going green and recycling can be fun. All it takes is some initiative and imagination.

Digital Single-Lens Reflex Cameras Versus Regular Digital Cameras

There are plenty of differences between a regular digital camera and an SLR camera. First off, the price tends to be a little bit different- but this is not just a status symbol thing. These are two different kinds of devices which are intended for two entirely different types of people to use. One of them works well for casual of users who do not want to think about snapping pictures. While the other one tends to do very well for professional users who really want to delve into the craft of fine photography.

Digital SLR cameras are professional tools for professional users. They do not just snap a picture without thinking about it. First off, these are the kinds of cameras which one keeps in a case that almost looks like a purse, because there are always tons of peripherals to be stored and potentially used. If you want to decide whether a particular focus length will do good things for your depth of field, or you really want to decide how you want flowing water to look (easy to choose when you select your shutter speed), this is the kind of camera you are going to need. But most people don’t need this level of sophistication.

For most people, a camera is just something for snapping pictures of pretty scenery and their friends and family. They do not care about all of the little extra things a fancy camera can do, and they really do not need to spend the extra money on one. SLR cameras are too much for many people, who don’t like fancy photography.
